The highlight of the Mozart Year 2006 in Prague will take place on 27 January 2006 at the Estates Theatre. The Czech Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Manfred Honeck will perform the most famous compositions by W.A. Mozart related to Prague: Overture to Don Giovanni, Prague Symphony and the Clarinet Concerto with the excellent Sharon Kam on the Basset Clarinet.
The Estates Theatre is one of the most beautiful historical theatres in Europe. Part of its charm, magic and value lies in its historical significance, from the musical career of Mozart to modern times. In 1787 Mozart conducted here the premier of "Don Giovanni". Also La Clemenza di Tito had its premiere in Estates Theatre.

Don Giovanni, Overture to the Opera K.527
This phenomenal overture – according to legend written during the night preceding the work´s premiere – contains elements illustrating the opera´s plot, as exemplified by the awesome sound of the approaching heavy steps of the stone tomb statue that Don Giovanni defiantly invited to his banquet, or the intoxicatingly whirling Allegro molto which may project the Don´s reckless character.
Concerto in A major for Clarinet and Orchestra K.622
In September 1791 Mozart paid his last visit to Prague, on the occasion of the production of his opera La clemenza di Tito, marking coronation festivities taking place in the city at that time. Basset horn solos in the opera were then played by Anton Stadler, a friend of Mozart´s, who was also an outstanding clarinettist. It was for him that Mozart composed his only Clarinet Concerto in A major, K. 622. It was premiered in Prague, on 16 October, 1791, seven weeks before the composer´s death.
Symphony No. 38 in D major „Prague” K.504
Mozart wrote his Symphony in D major, on 6 December, 1786, in Vienna. However, he reserved its first performance for Prague, in fact as a form of greeting the local audience, on 19 January, 1787. The production represented his first collaboration with Prague´s theatre orchestra, to which he subsequently addressed a letter of thanks modestly crediting its players for the larger part of his Prague success. Mozart´s words, „My orchestra is in Prague“, attest to the warmth of the rapport between the composer and the musicians. |
