MOZART FROM RAMALLAH |
| |
Until August 2005 a concert of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra in Ramallah was unthinkable. When the orchestra traveled to the Middle East in August 2005 for the first time it was a sensation. The concert in Ramallah on 21st of August 2005 is considered to be the absolut highlight of the six year history of the orchestra which was founded by Daniel Barenboim and Edward Said.
The internationally respected ensemble consists of young, highly talented musicians from Israel, Palestine, Syria, Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan and Spain. The orchestra works for a dialogue between the cultures of the Middle East through the experience of playing music together.
Featured in this concert recording is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's rarely played Sinfonia Concertante for oboe, clarinet, bassoon and horn. The three movements of the Sinfonia bathed in E flat major warmth, radiate the sort of gentle banter and good humour that every encounter between four friends aspires to. The solo parts lead the orchestra through the generous perambulations of the first movement and the finale's variations (with surprise ending). Mozart's works are studded with a loving exploration of the timbral and emotional worlds of each wind instrument, and the slow movement comes closest to his own peculiar sense for musical poetry that evokes intensity of feeling while evading firm interpretations of what that feeling might be.
