 12:23-12:52 GRAND OPERA FINALES - PART I
This LEGENDARY PERFORMANCES programme brings together the final scenes from four famous Mozart operas. Emotive, dramatic, as well as lyrical excerpts featuring unforgettable singers of the era are presented in exemplary recordings from the second half of the twentieth century.

Part I

DON GIOVANNI
Wilhelm Furtwängler conducts the dramatic final scene from DON GIOVANNI. The stony Commendatore calls upon Don Giovanni to finally repent his misdeeds and to change his ways. The unscrupulous seducer reacts with a repeated, arrogantly blurted-out “No” and is subsequently engulfed by the flames of hell. After the horrific episode is over, Giovanni’s victims come together for the closing résumé in the sextet of the epilogue: “Questo è il fin di chi fa mal” (“Such is the fate of evildoers”)
The title role of the above-mentioned production is sung by Cesare Siepi. He numbered during his time among the most celebrated interpreters of Don Giovanni and regularly performed under the direction of Furtwängler. Additional famous singers in this 1954 Salzburg production are: Deszö Ernster, Elisabeth Grümmer, Anton Dermota, Lisa della Casa, Otto Edelmann, Walter Berry, and Erna Berger.
Direction: Herbert Graf
Orchestra: Vienna Philharmonic

Karl Böhm, to whose distinctive devotion to Mozart the music world owes countless and unforgettable concert and opera performances, is the conductor of the further excerpts. Like Furtwängler he asserts the motto that music is the all-determining essence of opera and must not serve as mere illustration.

At the end of the opera the wager over the faithfulness of women is lost. The genuine betrothed couples get back together and all the intrigues are revealed with much ado. There is great confusion. It is transformed into a somewhat half-hearted reconciliation on the part of all involved and their renewed promises of love. This 1969 recording features a cast that has since become legend: Gundula Janowitz, Christa Ludwig, Olivera Miljakovic, Luigi Alva, Hermann Prey, Walter Berry.
Direction: Vaclav Kaslik
Orchestra: Vienna Philharmonic
