07:28-07:55 GRAND OPERA FINALES - PART II
This LEGENDARY PERFORMANCES programme brings together the final scenes from four famous Mozart operas. Emotive, dramatic, as well as lyrical excerpts featuring unforgettable singers of the era are presented in exemplary recordings from the second half of the twentieth century.

Part II
Karl Böhm, to whose distinctive devotion to Mozart the music world owes countless and unforgettable concert and opera performances, is the conductor of the two excerpts. Like Furtwängler he asserts the motto that music is the all-determining essence of opera and must not serve as mere illustration.

Following the turbulent events and confusions of identity in the nocturnal garden the masks are removed and mistakes resolved. There is shared pardon and understanding. Particularly moving is the wonderful melodic phrase with which the Count and Countess ask each other’s forgiveness. The end of the opera brings reconciliation among all parties and the call to proceed quickly to the joyous wedding celebration. “Ed al suon di lieta marcia corriam tutti a festeggiar!” (“And to the sound of a happy march let us all hasten to the celebration”).
This 1976 recording also boasts world famous soloists including Hermann Prey, Mirella Freni, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Kiri Te Kanawa, and Maria Ewing.

DIE ENTFÜHRUNG AUS DEM SERAIL (The Abduction from the Seraglio)
Mozart composed the Singspiel DIE ENTFÜHRUNG AUS DEM SERAIL (The Abduction from the Seraglio) in German. After the Pasha Bassa Selim, contrary to all expectations, generously spares the life of his arch enemy’s son, Mozart concludes his opera with a “Vaudeville”. This is a particular type of finale, within which all the singers recite the moral of the play in a sort of verse-refrain. Here the soloists and chorus praise Bassa’s humanity and magnanimity: “Wer so viel Huld vergessen kann, den seh' man mit Verachtung an.” ("Anyone who can forget such graciousness deserves to be looked upon with scorn”).
The soloists in this 1980 recording are Francisco Araiza, Edita Gruberova, Reri Grist, Norbert Orth, Thomas Holtzmann, and Martti Talvela.
