FRIEDRICH GULDA & CLAUDIA ABBADO |
| |
Friedrich Gulda and Claudio Abbado performed together for the first time in this memorable concert. The historical production presents a live recording of Mozart’s Piano Concert in A major (K 488) from 1986 in the Vienna Concert House.
This grand concert, which was frenetically celebrated by the audience, was accompanied by the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. The ensemble, founded in 1981, consists of young musicians from several European countries. The engaged and refreshing playing of these musicians has, over the last years, won enthusiastic critical acclaim from around the world.
This was the first joint performance of the Austrian star pianist Friedrich Gulda and the then musical director of the Vienna State Opera, Claudio Abbado. The artistic contacts between the two do in fact go a way back. During the Salzburg Festival in the 60s, Friedrich Gulda led a master class for pianists at the Mozarteum. One of his students was then the young Claudio Abbado.
After this first successful teamwork of Gulda und Abbado, numerous performances of Mozart’s piano concerts were to follow, which are as highly treasured now as then.
